About the Poems - MGAbout the Poemsby Michalle Gould These poems were partially inspired by the title, "If Not, Winter" of Anne Carson's book of translations of Sappho's poetry. I liked the purity and directness of the phrase, and tried to recreate that in my own poems, as if they were reconstructions of some scraps of poetry found in an ancient cave somewhere. In that spirit of discovery, "reconstruction 27" incorporates words from six Virginia Woolf works, while "reconstruction 16" incorporates words from poems about animals by Adrienne Rich, D.H. Lawrence, Thomas Hardy, Rainer Maria Rilke, William Blake, Marianne Moore. "Reconstruction 22", somewhat by contrast, uses words from the refrigerator poetry application on Facebook! |
