About the Poems
by Kate Schapira These poems are from a project I started by describing as "about thrift and pride", but through repeated patching, jerry-rigging and wear, the project is closer to being "about use and identity" -- how we define who we are through what we use, the pitfalls in thinking of things (including language and science) and people (including family and lovers) in terms of use, the implication that identity is important enough to justify use. Is there a way to repurpose our ideas about ourselves and each other? Example: I dislike the word "repurpose", but I brought it in because it was close enough to what I needed in order to connect "way" and "ideas".
