by Lea Graham These poems are from a manuscript, Crushes, that began in a cross-hatch of reading Anne Carson’s Eros: The Bittersweet, Paul Friedrich’s The Meaning of Aphrodite, watching Jim Jarmusch films, looking at a hodge-podge of art and thinking about the change in my students’ behavior each spring while teaching at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. I took up the notion of eros, playing fast and loose with it. The poems try to walk a perimeter around what drives desire: space/geography, the mysterious, and language itself.
