About the Poems
by Arianne Zwartjes These poems, narratively, follow the splinter and break-off of my relationship with a partner who also happened to be transgender, and who was beginning some aspects of physical transition around that time. The poems revolve around body, fracture, inconstancy. Through their lyric, fragmented interrogation of body, physicality, and gender, they track sorrow and loss. They explore the shatter of relationship, of connectivity, and the mortality of self & body that we so often develop a heightened awareness of when experiencing any kind of loss in our lives—and which, in this case, was amplified by the experience of a body I had known changing away from me.
