About the Poems - WBAbout the Poemsby Wendy Babiak These are part of a larger sequence that started as a lark, inspired by a friend on Facebook who had called me Wonder Woman for attempting to accomplish too much in one day (a bad habit of mine that often lays me out). I realized quickly they were a great way to laugh at myself and the earnestness of my first book of poems, which is a sincere attempt to save humanity from it's downward spiral into violence, against other humans and against the natural world on which we rely. Being a rather serious person deep down (despite my often jocular approach to the world), I couldn't resist the urge to instill the sequence with social commentary, in this case, a feminist perspective (a propos, considering that Wonder Woman was an intentionally feminist creation) investigating the balance a woman must strike between domestic concerns and concerns of the world, as well as between love and independence. In an exciting development for this homebody, the poems are now part of a documentary in the making, The History of the Universe as Told by Wonder Woman, the trailer of which can be found here: http://vaquerafilms.com/wonderwoman/. |
