About the Poems - KSAbout the Poemsby Kate Schapira I wrote these poems in response to a series of self-portraits as an old lady by cartoonist Jillian Tamaki in her book Indoor Voice (Drawn & Quarterly). I'm currently not very old, but I hope to be one day. People tend to talk confidently about ages that they do not currently inhabit as if they never had inhabited them, or never would — as though different states of being made us into different creatures. In these poems I tried to be a number of possible future continuous selves that might arise from a combination of what I'm like now, physical and mental possibility, and time. I look forward to reading them when I'm actually old and seeing how right or wrong I was. |
