About the Poems
by Laura Van Prooyen These poems are part of a new manuscript currently titled Resist, which attempts to take an honest eye to the fundamental subjects of marriage and children, the competing claims of desire and responsibility, of excitement and stability. In short, loving anyone can be dangerous business, rife with complications, with miscommunication, and—always!—with the potential for loss. In terms of writing, I'm most intersted in poems that push beyond the limits of what I might "know" and challenge me to linger in the unsettling place of what I don't know. Like, for instance, what is it that we call "happiness"? Or, why might we yearn for things we know would harm us?
