by Anne Gorrick These numbered poems are from a larger series called “Japonisme: The Pillow Book Poems.” They are modernizations/rethinkings of sections from a thousand-year-old Heian manuscript. This time period was a perfect time to live as a woman poet: you could have lots of lovers; poetry was a competitive sport in amazing clothes; you were expected to excel in poetry AND visual art. I spend a lot of time thinking I was born in the wrong time. Did I also say bitchiness was a virtue then?
