About the Poems

by Erika Howsare

All of these poems, written in a semester three years ago, are explorations of the wobbly lyric. They believe in hooking something lightly and letting it swing around through a wider atmosphere. And they feel expressive to me, evocative. But they range from straightforward embellishment of an event ("Mrs. M") to repetition as a painterly effect ("Words for an Oasis"), which are not necessarily opposite poles but do not sit on the same bus seat, either. So these poems were all attempts, pokes.
