hymn 1

Valerie Witte

tree like or spines • dangle apple, milk, honey fleeting
ambrosia chambered nautilus sung round • still flowers
are catkins in spring gardens thread twine eyed

cross • limb fork low we in tandem reaching • faith
belie sinews inelastic reason • spanning receive an alphabet
suspended upside down • part to counter • part to flee

ourselves meld a wrinkle, blink • organ centers our dual
arms accrue, fold as a tongue curled • replicate faith
beguile sinners • loose lobed or attached roots new • i

winged brown, stout the terminal bud is furrowed
ridges wasn’t a seedling browsed • delve welling where
but myth three sisters guard all forking i elm you ash blown
