Between the Lakes

Ann Neuser Lederer

In fog
   in fall
in waning light

Creep ready
   over brake
around the bend
behind
   pink tail lights
on the unfamiliar road

Be watchful
   for the lakes
   that hover
   at the edge

Nonexistent guardrails
   comfort for the strangers

Between the wary and weary
   Between
   the breast and the beast
are only bags of tricks

Cars sinking, empty

   Occupants
   trudging in dusk
in the slush

Like sirens, the smoke seduces

Out on the semi-frozen surface
   foxes tread
   footprints
nearly visible
   within the new wet snow

Belfast and Belgrade just
   around the bend
