from Life As A Crossword Puzzle

Noah Falck

12. Across

Before this
there was a moment
in our minds
where we were thinking
like closet monsters:
obedient, yet harmful
to the eyes of children.
Especially when draped
in mommy's colorful,
crotchless underwear –
the elastic shredded so thin
it could be used as floss.
But now, the evening
is finally ours, with the moon
burning islands of light
across the bedspread
and those sleeping
shoulder to shoulder
rearrange themselves
within their dreams.
Outside the city lights
are considering escape-routes
like the stars
who periodically
flick off and drop out
of sight without warning.
